Your students want to learn QuickBooks Online for small business management. Our textbooks not only prepare them for certification exams, but also give them the confidence to do bookkeeping for their own companies, and teach them practical workplace skills.
Intuit shares this same commitment to “Powering Prosperity.” To achieve this goal, they are always testing improvements to QuickBooks Online’s interface. Once they decide what is most popular with users, it becomes the new experience for everyone. Every time you begin a new group of students, you will find small improvements.
We release a new edition of our best-in-class textbook every year. Sometimes, if major changes warrant, we will even update new pages during the year.
We are proud to introduce you to our 2024 edition of QuickBooks Online Fundamentals and Complete. Not only are they filled with small changes so that the instructions continue to match the interface, but they also feature several major developments released over the last year.
New Navigation
Intuit has done away with the Business View and Accountant View toggle, since users found it confusing to see two different interfaces. Instead, QuickBooks Online revamped the Left Navigation Bar to combine the best of both. Our 2024 books feature the new navigation, including how to create bookmarks and customize it.
Modern Reports
Intuit is beta testing a new reports experience. It’s more powerful than the “Classic” mode, including enhanced grouping and filtering, and access to more columns. The 2024 books teach students how to use and customize reports with the new interface, while still including the traditional reports.
Modern Invoices
Intuit is also designing a new “Modern” Invoice. While still in Beta, it’s clear that it’s going to be the new normal. Our 2024 instructions teach students how to take advantage of the new interface.
Yet Another Chart of Accounts Experience
In 2023, QuickBooks featured a new layout to create categories in the Chart of Accounts, but users found it cumbersome, so they revamped it yet again. This section of the book has been updated for the second year in a row as we keep up with Intuit’s experimentation.
A Not-Quite-Finished-Being-Improved Chart of Accounts
A revised Chart of Accounts (COA) was introduced in 2022, and at the time we rewrote the books to accommodate it. However, Intuit received loud feedback because most users found it long and cumbersome. In 2023 they began testing a short essential Chart of Accounts instead.
While Intuit seems to have settled somewhere in the middle, we are never sure what COA you will find when you create student files for the Apply Your Knowledge end-of-chapter exercise and the Case Study at the midpoint and end of the books.
To make sure all students have the same experience, our instructions show students how to import one that matches the book. An Excel file with the correct COA can be found in the Classroom Files folder. By our 2025 edition next year, we will incorporate Intuit’s final decision into the text.
Payroll
Intuit completely redesigned and simplified the Payroll setup process. Chapter 13 and 14 in QBO Complete has been completely rewritten. Instead of walking through the Payroll Setup Wizard that was subject to change, students will now view the Payroll Center in its natural state, exploring the Payroll Center and its settings as they appear on the screen.
