As an instructor using our new QuickBooks Online Fundamentals and QuickBooks Online Complete textbooks in their classes, one of the things you will hear a lot from your students is “How come my QBO file doesn’t match the book?” I want to be proactive and let you know to expect the unexpected.
One of the benefits of using QuickBooks Online is that Intuit is always updating it according to user feedback.
QBO is “live” software, always changing and growing. Intuit constantly tweaks the interface to make it easier to use. They roll out enhanced features on a regular basis. The sales tax and payroll tables use real-life rates, which are subject to change.
Both of our textbooks, QuickBooks Online Fundamentals and QuickBooks Online Complete were 100% up-to-date at the time of publication, but may not reflect changes made by Intuit since then.
My first suggestion is to be sure you are using QBO in “Accountant View,” found under the Gear in the upper right corner, and described in the preface of the textbook. Intuit also includes a “Business View” where they try to design a business-owner-friendly experience. If your software looks nothing like the book, toggling this view will set you right.
When you and your students come across a step that doesn’t match your screenshots, just stop for a moment and take a deep breath. Look around. You will quickly be able to find a similar label, text box, or section somewhere on your screen. Make a note in your book and move on!
We will review and update both books regularly. New editions will be published at least annually, or more often if the changes are significant.
